Reset SRS (airbag) light on Honda Civic
74
Today I will be showing you how to reset the SRS (airbag) light on your Civic. I was told that this should work for older Civic (1999 to 2000) as well, but today the tutorial was done on a 2004 Honda Civic.
There are several reasons why the SRS light goes on and one of them is a malfunctioning seat belt buckle.
Please before we start you should know that you shouldn't be ignoring the SRS light. Resetting the system does not fix the problem and the SRS light will turn on again until the problem is fixed.
If your problem is a malfunctioning seat belt buckle then bring it to your nearest dealership as this part is a lifetime warranty repair and will be a no-cost repair to you. However you should know this warranty is only valid for vehicles purchased in the USA so our Canadian friends are out of luck as Honda Canada does not honor this warranty repair like Honda of America.
Now on to resetting your SRS light.
First lets find your fuse box. This should be underneath the steering wheel and just above the pedals.
Now you need to buy the SCS service connector (part# 07PAZ-0010100) or a simple paper clip. Having the SCS connector makes things easy though.
Second you need to find the MES (Memory Erase Signal) connector which should be yellow in colour.
On to the steps on how to reset the SRS light.
Again as I have mentioned above this process will only reset your SRS System. If what caused it to trigger the SRS warning light has not been fixed the SRS light will just turn on again after awhile.
Now here we go:
1. Make sure the ignition is in the "off" position and connect the SCS Service connector (or paper clip) to the MES Plug.
2. Turn Ignition to the "on" position. The SRS indicator light will come on for about 6 seconds then go off.
3. Disconnect SCS service connector (or paper clip) from MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS indicator light goes off. SRS light will come on again. We will repeat this step again.
4. Connect the SCS service connector (or paper clip) to the MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS light comes on. SRS indicator light will go off.
5. Disconnect SCS service connector from MES connector within 4 seconds. SRS indicator light will indicate that memory is erased by blinking 2 times.
6. Turn ignition to the off position and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
Ok so now you're done. You don't need to start your vehicle. Just turn the ignition to the "on" position and look at the SRS light. This should come on as normal and go out after 5 seconds. If it does then you have successfully done a reset of your SRS light.
Now if it does not work the first time try it again. It all comes down to timing and as always using the paper clip is the hard way of doing this. Good luck and as always have this checked out by Honda. As you know when the SRS light is on the Air Bag is disabled and you don't want to be caught without air bags.

A pair of pointed tweezers work well.
